Patient Story: Urine Loss with Sexual Intercourse

Mrs DB, a 28 year old lady came to us with this story.

“ We were childhood sweethearts. We married early and worked hard to buy our little house.Three months ago, a beautiful little boy came along to fill our lives. We were so happy. My husband and I always had a good sex life and he just couldn’t wait to start again. Six weeks after the baby we had sex for the first time.

Soon after we started, I felt this warm fluid pouring over my thighs and into the bed. My husband stopped and said “What's this?”. It was urine. It happened again the next night and every night we tried.

We went back to our gynaecologist who said he didn’t know what the problem was, but it might be helped with pelvic floor exercises. I went to a physio who taught me how to squeeze up my pelvic floor muscles. I tried it for a month. It sort of worked sometimes, but I was so anxious now, that I just couldn’t bring myself to have sex any more.”

We had seen several such women, all of whom had been cured by inserting a sling to repair the front ligament. One concern with Mrs DB was that she wanted to have another baby. We were able to assure her that this would not be a problem and she would not need a Caesarian Section. Six weeks after the operation, Mrs DB and her husband had their first intercourse. She rang to tell us the next day that everything was now fine and that she was cured.
